NEW Direct from Downtown Auckland to Rakino Island

Greetings,

We are Belaire Ferries and we’re now here for your future convenience, offering a new direct ferry service from Downtown to Rakino Island. Whether you’re familiar with us or not, we would like to extend a warm welcome to you, as well as thanking Auckland Transport for their support in helping us to provide you with this new service.

You may have heard that we have been operating the West Harbour to Downtown run for the last seven years. Our current passengers will testify that we run a pretty tight ship (so to speak), providing 14 return runs daily, Monday to Friday. With our staff maintaining a high level of professionalism, we always consider your safety first and with over 55,000 passengers in the last year, we have worked hard to achieve our impressive reputation and record for punctuality and reliability.

Clipper 1, the latest addition to our fleet, has previously been used for the Rakino/ Matiatia/ Pine Harbour run and is now at your service. She is capable of carrying 40 people with carry-on luggage and completes a one-way trip in 45 minutes. No bookings are required and all tickets are purchased on board. For pricing updates, additional trip information plus other details, please visit our website at www.belaire.co.nz.
Heading to Rakino, your journey departs from pier 3B at the Downtown terminal, which provides easy access to the Britomart public transport hub and downtown parking. Drop-off and loading bays are available on the eastern side of the Ferry Building and on lower Albert Street, with weekend and long-term parking available at the Auckland Downtown Parking Building.

- Each passenger can bring one carry on item (equivalent to a banana box) and a medium suitcase (equivalent of 2 banana boxes) free of charge. Additional items (dependent on space being available) are allowed at a rate of $4 - $6. Dogs and cats suitably restrained are also permitted. Passengers are advised to refer to the attached leaflet for exact luggage specifications. For any bulky or large quantities of freight Belaire Ferries highly recommends and encourages use of the existing Sealink service (www.sealink.co.nz).

Successful Planting Day

Planting Day Information

A planting day is planned for this Saturday 4^th June. I would like an indication of who is able to assist with the planting and/or carrying plants to the people who are doing the planting. When I have an idea of numbers and who is will be assisting I will email regarding where to meet and what time etc. There are 3 locations for the planting – 2 adjacent sites overlooking Sandy Bay (on the lower portion of the properties near the recent slip), around the wetland above Maori Garden Bay (Hester/Mark Brown) property, and on the DOC Reserve at the end on Woody Bay Road and along the front of the 2 adjacent properties to the east).

The plants will be delivered to the island on Friday (by about 1pm) and the other part of the project that I would like assistance with, is getting the plants (1200) from the wharf to as close to where they will be planted as possible. A tractor and trailer would be ideal. Please indicate whether you are able to bring a sharp spade(s) – the area has been sprayed about 5 weeks ago and the locations marked with a bamboo stake.

Working Bee - Hall Renovations

This weekend we are having a working bee at the Hall to push on and get it finished for Easter.

Saturday 2nd 9am till 4pm and Sunday 3rd 10am till 1pm. If you can come for all or part of that time we would really appreciate your help. Bring a hammer and be willing to labour. Some of it is just carrying sheets of ply wood up and down stairs.

Tree Planting & Transport

Last year I received a grant of $6,300.00 from ACC / ARC for planting work on the island.

As part of my proposed planting for the DOC reserve on the island, I need to get about 1200 small (Pb3) plants from Waiheke to Rakino in the middle of Winter. I am purchasing the plants from Gulf Trees on Waiheke and they are usually delivered to Matiatia and picked up from there.

Does anybody have any contacts/ideas about how I could do this. If somebody volunteered to use their boat, I would be able to provide petrol money and food.

When I have organized a weekend, I will be asking for volunteers. Feel free to register interest now, it could be fun. Teenagers are welcome.

This year we need to source some gear for the Jazz & Art Picnic and are asking if anyone has access to the use of a set of Drums or a Bass Amp and is willing to loan it to us for use at the festival. We are able to make arrangements for Freight to and from the island

Drum kit – a five piece with preferably a 22 inch bass drum – so 5 pieces are three toms (including a floor to) bass drum and snare drum (and stand); drum pedal, hi hat stand and three cymbal stands and drum stool. Drummers often like to bring their own cymbals

Bass Amp – Any full size unit that is in good working order

Auckland Transport Ferry Service Survey

Auckland Transport is inviting residents and visitors to Rakino Island to complete a survey about transport services to and from Rakino Island and how they are used. The survey is available for download here, and can also be found on board the Pine Harbour Ferry and Reuben Water Taxis until the end of January. For SeaLink Barge customers the survey will also be available on board the next sailing on 8 February.

Please take the opportunity to complete this short survey and provide feedback about the transport options available to the Island. Feel free to pass on to other people you know use the ferry, water taxi or barge services.

Surveys can be returned to the boat crews, or post back to Auckland Transport by the end of January 2011.

From Friday 29 October 2010 NO passengers or freight will be allowed down the gangway until the ferry from town has berthed and unloaded.

ALL passengers will be checked for freight and charged accordingly (tickets will be sold at the gangway).

Passengers will then able to board with their freight/children/dogs etc Freight is charged at a nominal fee only ($8.00 per freight ticket) and is integral to the continuation of the service.

The Pine Harbour Christmas holiday period timetable is available at the wharf on Rakino and is on the Ferry. Thank you to Pine Harbour for sending this information so early in the year. The Christmas timetable will be uploaded to this blog sometime over the next week.
The fare has increased slightly, it is now $46 for a return trip.
Please be honest and purchase a freight ticket if you have more than two bags, the freight ticket is a nominal fee.

ARC Biosecurity Team, Article 1

Pest free islands are one of the greatest features of the Hauraki Gulf and Rakino is a one of the most successful of these, remaining free of animal pests for nearly ten years.

The Treasure islands campaign between the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and Department of Conservation (DOC) aims to celebrate and protect pest free islands like Rakino and others in the Gulf.

It encourages boaties and island visitors to check their boats, and other equipment for pests like rats, mice, ants and weed seeds so new pests can’t stowaway and to islands.

Message from Albie McCabe

It is with deep sorrow I have to inform you of the passing of my dear wife Ann. She had struggled with life for a number of months and this morning it came to an end.

Her funeral will take place at the Royal Oak Baptist Church, Royal Oak, Auckland at 1pm on Wed 31st March.

I would like to express my thanks and appreciation of the love and support given to us by all our dear friends over the difficult period of Ann's illness.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Each exhibit must be the sole work of the artist.
Artists are required to pay an entry fee of $10
Exhibitors must be Rakino Island property owners, residents and their immediate families or regular visitors to the Island.
All entries must be for sale and include a 10% commission that will be deducted from the sale source when payment is made to the artist and donated to the Jazz Festival Fund.
Sales made using visa card will also attract an additional 5%transaction fee deduction.

Easter Art Exhibition

Once again in conjunction with the Rakino Ratepayers Association – Rakino jazz festival, we will be holding the Rakino Artist’s Exhibition – this will take place on Saturday of Easter weekend in the Rakino wharf hall.

Last years show was the best we have had with a good sales record too ----We have a few new artists in our midst now --- and our Art mornings on Rakino is producing a depth of talent yet to be exhibited---so I am confident your efforts will be truly rewarded in giving us our best show ever.

We have again set an entry fee of $10 for each artist, this will help to cover the cost of cataloguing entries – artwork presentation and the gala-opening preview for artists and invited guests.

The Gala –opening preview will take place on Good Friday evening at 6pm – all artist partners and friends are invited to attend
.

Due to constraints of exhibition space, regrettably we will not be accepting children’s artwork.

We look forward to your support for this years show.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY.

Each exhibit must be the sole work of the artist.
Artists are required to pay an entry fee of $10
Exhibitors must be Rakino Island property owners, residents and their immediate families or regular visitors to the Island.
All entries must be for sale and include a 10% commission that will be deducted from the sale source when payment is made to the artist and donated to the Jazz Festival Fund.
Sales made using visa card will also attract an additional 5%transaction fee deduction.

The Rakino Jazz and Art Festival organisers need your help on the day - Saturday, 03 April 2010.

Help includes jobs such as:
Selling raffle tickets
Cooking on the BBQ
Selling food
Selling drinks
Checking the toilets
Checking the rubbish
General 'dogs-body'
Assisting with First Aid (if you are qualified)
Clean-up when it's done and dusted.
etc....

Lost Bag With Cell Phone

On Monday afternoon of anniversary weekend I lost a black bag at the wharf.
A kind person offered to carry it down from the carpark to the 3pm water taxi but it seemed to vanish from there. May have got caught up with somebodys stuff and gone in another boat. Unable to locate it at the wharf.
It is a soft-sided bag with resene printed on the side in white lettering.
It contains my cell phone and lots of wet and dirty washing.
(Maybe the person who carried it for me could tell me what happened to it?)
